Veep and why I'm still not over the fact that I had to explain the ending

Veep and why I'm still not over the fact that I had to explain the ending

Next on our list was Veep on HBO. Well, actually, it wasn’t next but it happened to be our next watch because during a lovely visit from some NYC friends for my birthday we started watching it hungover. Any…who…. Veep officially became the next watch in our saga of watching great tv.

I’m not mad about it because, gun to my head, this would definitely be a top-five favorite comedy. Why is this one of my favorite comedies, you didn’t ask? Because I grew up with a fucking sailor mouth. Not a sailor in my mouth, although as a 32-year-old who is living in a gayless tundra I’d kill someone to have a sailor in my mouth. But I digress. Where were we? Oh yes, a sailor's mouth. As such, I was VERY creative with my cursing and if there is one show that is creative with their cursing it is this show. The way they use cursing to articulate points is like poetry to me:

“What are you laughing about, Jolly Green Jizzface?”

“Jonah! Hey, listen, settle something for me: You like to have sex and you like to travel? Then you can fuck off.”

“General George Washington could climb out of his grave right now, and I would rather eat out his zombified wooden asshole twice a day than be his vice fucking -- fucking anything.”

My personal favorite:

“That’s like trying to use a croissant (read in french) like a dildo. No. Let me be more clear. It doesn’t get the job done. And it makes a fucking MESS!” The sheer artistry of this quote is literally why it will forever remain my favorite.

Those were not the point of this blog. While we may have started this show because we were visited by some of my NYC family we continued to watch it because its great TV. I think the biggest thing that stuck out to me from watching this with my mom in a 2021 lens was just how disfunctional this ‘parody’ of a show was and how similar it was to our actual government. I think this show started out as an exaggeration of what they thought the government was and then ended up hitting the nail pretty squarely on the head.

There were so many moments throughout watching this with my mom that we would laugh out loud at the jokes and then in the next minute have to pause and have a serious discussion about politics and where the world went wrong with everything. I think one of my favorite things about doing this with my mom is the conversations and uncomfortable topics. It brought up a lot of topics about race, equality, and just how terrible this country and our government can be. It was great. Like I say TV can do all these things if you don’t use it as just a mindless waste of time!

The one thing about watching this with my mom was that she didn’t get the best part about the ending!!! The Tom Hanks joke might be why this show is definitely in my top. I mean how fucking full circle can you get? But unfortunately, I had to point that joke out to my mom. I think I’m being a little unfair though because it was only her FIRST time watching the whole series and I’ve probably seen the first season like 10 times? Maybe more. But at the same time. WHAT A GREAT JOKE!!! It’s like the Mean Girls joke about Janis being Lebanese. It’s a slow burn but so worth it. Also if you don’t know what I’m talking about click here.

All in all Veep is one of my favorite shows and I’m so glad I got to share it with my momma.

Tata for now!! Off to run for office because I’d be better than most of the buffoons in there!
